It’s great to have a lifted truck or SUV. You’re rolling down the highway and sitting at a commanding height, looking down on all the other vehicles around you. It’s a powerful feeling.
If you’re contemplating a lift kit, though, there are some things to consider. What kind of wheels and tires are you thinking about? What kind of use will the truck really see? What’s your budget?
If you’re just looking for a little boost in ride height for oversize tires, maybe a body lift kit is what you need. A body lift kit will lift the body itself off the frame with no changes to the factory suspension or ride quality. The down side of a body lift kit is the labor involved, since it requires completely disconnecting the body, lifting it and securing it again on spacers.
Leveling kits are another good choice for a moderate amount of lift. A leveling kit will balance the truck’s stance from front to rear, which is very useful when hauling heavy loads or towing a trailer.
A suspension lift kit is the way to go for really large tires. Suspension lift kits involve a complete upgrade of shocks and springs, often with extended brake lines and drivetrain alterations as well to compensate for the extra ride height. The downside of a suspension lift kit is that the more radical the lift, the more it’s a re-engineering of the entire suspension geometry and drivetrain. Suspension lift kits can also result in a stiffer ride and a change in handling due to the higher center of gravity (if not done right).
